PETA Reminds Pet Parents What to do During Wildfire Evacuation

As the Palisades fire forces residents to evacuate, PETA is urging everyone to prioritize the safety of their animal companions. Abandoning animals during emergencies can lead to tragic consequences, including death and legal repercussions.

For small animals such as cats, rabbits, birds, guinea pigs, and gerbils, secure carriers are essential (with birds covered for added safety). Dogs should be harnessed and leashed to prevent them from getting lost or injured. Bring enough food to sustain your animals for several days, ensuring their needs are met during displacement. For larger animals like horses, leaving them confined in stalls is a dangerous mistake. If evacuation isn’t possible, it’s vital to release them so they have a chance to escape the flames.

If you encounter animals in danger, try to help or note their exact location and contact authorities immediately. In areas impacted by smoke or ash, animals should remain indoors, and outdoor activities, such as running with dogs, should be avoided to protect their health.

Evacuating without your animals is not only inhumane but may also result in prosecution. PETA emphasizes the importance of planning ahead for emergencies to keep all family members, including pets, safe.

PETA additionally share a wildfire-preparedness public service announcement featuring Ali MacGraw.

PETA also released a comprehensive guide to help pet owners prepare for potential evacuations. The organization emphasizes the importance of having a well-thought-out evacuation plan, which includes identifying pet-friendly destinations like certain hotels and shelters.

Key recommendations include ensuring pets are microchipped with up-to-date contact information and outfitted with proper identification. Pet owners are advised to create an evacuation kit containing essential supplies such as food, water, medications, and a first aid kit.

The guide also highlights the importance of safe transportation for pets. Each animal should have its own carrier, while larger dogs should be secured with crash-tested harnesses. For small pets like fish and reptiles, specific care instructions are provided to ensure their safety during evacuations.

PETA stresses the need for a proactive approach to wildfire preparedness, noting the increasing severity of wildfires linked to Climate change. By following these guidelines, pet owners can better safeguard their animal companions when disaster strikes.
