In a dramatic turn of events, CNN national correspondent Natasha Chen and her team found themselves amidst one of the most intense wildfires to hit the Los Angeles area this year. While covering the devastating flames racing through Southern California on Tuesday, the crew faced a life-threatening situation that tested their resilience and quick thinking.

Chen and her team arrived around noon to report on the wildfires, initially believing it to be a routine assignment. However, as the sun set over the scorched Pacific Coast Highway, the situation quickly escalated. Flames surged south of their location, forcing the evacuation of thousands and transforming their reporting mission into a perilous escape.

“We were there from about noon until just after 6 p.m. local time,” Chen shared with CNN’s Rosemary Church. “We hadn’t realized how severe it had become until the flames jumped the highway.” Seeking safety, the crew approached a firefighter who advised them to head south. What followed was a harrowing journey through chaos, with flames on both sides of the highway and embers flying through their vehicle.

The wildfires expanded rapidly, engulfing over 2,000 acres by the end of the day—a stark increase from initial reports of 20 acres. The fire spread at a rate comparable to several football fields per minute, catching many residents off guard. The thick smoke turned the iconic Pacific Coast Highway into a hazy, fiery landscape, forcing residents to make urgent decisions about what to save, from cherished wedding rings to important documents.

“Watching the flames and feeling the heat inside the car was terrifying,” recounted CNN producer Kat Jaeger. The crew’s experience highlighted the fierce reality many residents face, with homes and palm trees ablaze and the community gripped by fear.

As Climate change continues to fuel more intense and frequent wildfires, stories like Chen’s underscore the urgent need for sustainable solutions and community preparedness.
