Bill Gates’ climate-focused nonprofit, Breakthrough Energy, has laid off its entire public policy team in the US and all staff in Europe, according to Bloomberg. The decision marks a major shift for the influential group, which had previously made public policy advocacy a core part of its mission to combat climate change.

These cuts come as the organization pivots away from advocacy work in response to a shifting political climate in the US under President Donald Trump. The administration has reversed several climate-related initiatives, including firing Environmental Protection Agency staff, cancelling climate project grants, and withdrawing from the Paris Agreement. Breakthrough Energy’s move appears to align with a broader trend of reduced federal climate Support, especially as Republican lawmakers consider rolling back President Biden’s landmark climate legislation.

Breakthrough Energy, which also houses ventures and funding platforms like Breakthrough Energy Ventures and Breakthrough Catalyst, confirmed that its investment and grantmaking arms were unaffected by the layoffs. These divisions will continue to Support emerging clean technologies and startups globally. A spokesperson noted that Gates remains committed to clean energy, with ongoing work focused on reliable and affordable solutions to Climate change.

However, the downsizing of the policy team raises concerns about the group’s long-term influence on environmental legislation, especially in the US and Europe. Cipher News, a climate news platform funded by Breakthrough, is also seeking new financial backing to stay afloat.

In his 2021 book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster, Gates wrote that strong policy frameworks are essential to accelerating clean energy adoption. But with policy now taking a back seat, questions remain about how far private innovation can go without political Support.

Now more than ever, it’s vital for individuals to fill the gap. Stay informed, Support plant-based businesses, and push for climate action in your own community. Change doesn’t have to come from the top—it starts with us.
