4. Stratospheric Aerosol Injection by Make Sunsets

In response to record-high global temperatures and increasing climate-related deaths, a controversial initiative in the Bay Area, by Make Sunsets, aims to cool the Earth by deploying weather balloons filled with sulfur dioxide and helium. As these balloons ascend over 12 miles, they will burst, releasing gases that reflect sunlight back into space, mimicking the cooling effects of volcanic eruptions. This method, developed by the startup “Make Sunsets,” has already launched 80 balloons since 2022, with the potential to reduce temperatures temporarily. However, experts urge caution, emphasizing the need for further research to understand the risks and implications of such geoengineering efforts before widespread deployment can be considered viable.

5. Unravel Carbon
