A growing number of Europeans are turning away from American-made products in protest of Donald Trump’s re-election. According to a recent CNN article by Rob Picheta, many are boycotting everyday items like toothpaste, soft drinks, and whiskey as a quiet form of resistance.
People like Moya O’Sullivan, a teacher from Ireland, and James Blackledge, a postman from England, have started cutting US brands from their shopping lists. Philadelphia cream cheese, Coca-Cola, and even McDonald’s coffee are off their menus. Their hope? That changing consumer habits might send a message across the Atlantic. “We vote with our money,” says O’Sullivan.
Though not a mass movement, there’s growing momentum. Denmark’s biggest retailer, Salling Group, now adds black stars to labels to help customers choose European-made items. Online groups in Sweden and Denmark boasting tens of thousands of members actively share US-free alternatives. Meanwhile, sales of Teslas have dropped sharply in Europe, and mini protests have popped up outside showrooms.
Boycotts aren’t new — and experts agree they don’t always hit the bottom line. But they can still impact a company’s reputation, especially when part of a larger conversation. And that conversation now includes outrage over new tariffs, global instability, and Trump’s relationship with controversial figures and policies like Putin.
These aren’t just symbolic gestures. For many, it’s about aligning their money with their values. Whether or not it dents corporate profits, choosing a local brand over a US one feels like a small but meaningful step.
Want to help create a kinder, more sustainable world? Support local producers, choose plant-based options, and think twice about where your money goes. Every purchase matters — and your small decisions can add up to big change.
