The Trump administration has announced a major rollback in climate research funding, targeting a key program at Princeton University. According to a recent report by Brad Plumer and Austyn Gaffney in The New York Times, nearly $4 million in federal grants are being pulled from programs that study sea-level rise, coastal flooding, and the effects of global warming.
The funding cuts focus on the Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System, a collaboration between NOAA and Princeton. This program is known for producing some of the world’s most advanced climate models, thanks in part to scientists like Nobel Prize winner Syukuro Manabe. Despite the global recognition of this research, the Commerce Department claimed it promotes “exaggerated and implausible climate threats,” blaming it for rising “climate anxiety” among American youth.
NOAA, which spends about $220 million a year on climate research, has been directed to scale back these efforts. In addition to cutting climate modeling, the administration also canceled funding for educational programs aimed at students from kindergarten through high school.
Climate scientists were quick to criticize the decision. Valérie Masson-Delmotte of University of Paris-Saclay warned that denying climate risks doesn’t make them disappear. Rick Spinrad, former NOAA administrator, called the cuts a “slap in the face” to sectors like agriculture and energy that rely heavily on accurate climate predictions.
Princeton declined to comment on the situation. However, the cuts are part of a larger trend, with the Trump administration reviewing billions in federal funding to multiple universities.
