The climate crisis is moving so fast it could soon destroy capitalism itself, according to a warning from Günther Thallinger, a board member at Allianz SE. In a recent LinkedIn post, Thallinger explained that global temperatures are rising towards levels where insurers can no longer offer coverage for many risks, a point that would trigger a full breakdown of financial systems. Without insurance, mortgages, investments, and even basic financial stability could disappear, he said in an article by Damian Carrington for The Guardian.
Thallinger’s warning isn’t based on theory. Some companies have already pulled home insurance in parts of California because of repeated wildfires. He called it a “climate-induced credit crunch,” pointing out that flooded homes, overheated cities, and degraded assets are becoming everyday realities. If global heating reaches 3°C, he said, governments won’t be able to cover the costs of disaster recovery, and people won’t be able to adapt to conditions beyond human tolerance.
Supporting Thallinger’s view, other insurers like Aviva and Zurich have also stressed the urgent need to reach net zero emissions. Recent figures show extreme weather damages costing the world over $2 trillion in just the past decade.
Despite the grim outlook, Thallinger believes there is still hope. The technologies to transition away from fossil fuels already exist—the only missing pieces are speed and scale. He urged the financial sector to put sustainability goals on the same level as profit goals, warning that delays only make the future riskier.
Our planet needs urgent action. Choosing a plant-based diet, reducing carbon footprints, and supporting green policies are powerful ways each of us can help. Every small step matters when it comes to protecting the future of life—and love—for all beings.
