The Trump administration is moving to dismantle the Energy Star program and cut a key climate division within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), according to a report by The Hill on May 6, 2025.
At a recent staff meeting, EPA employees were told that both the Energy Star initiative and the Climate Protection Partnerships division that oversees it will be eliminated. The EPA is also cutting its Climate change division, which manages the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, a tool used to track emissions from major polluters.
Nicole Cantello, president of the EPA’s Midwest employee union, called the move “short sighted and disastrous.” She warned that halting climate efforts now, amid worsening wildfires and floods, “is the time to ramp up the climate resiliency of our communities.”
Energy Star has long been a voluntary labeling program that helps consumers identify energy-efficient products. Despite its non-mandatory nature, it has gained wide industry Support. Appliance makers and trade groups have praised the program for offering consumers simple, credible information. As Steven Nadel of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy put it, removing Energy Star “would take away basic information from consumers who want to choose cost-saving products easily.”
The EPA defended the decision as part of a “broad reorganization” to improve agency efficiency. But critics argue that the administration’s persistent targeting of climate initiatives undercuts both environmental progress and public access to green products.
Slashing these programs threatens more than just statistics and stickers—it weakens transparency, consumer empowerment, and climate accountability.
Now is the time to raise our voices. Support brands that prioritize sustainability, choose energy-efficient appliances, and vote for leaders who value climate action. Staying silent won’t slow down the damage—but conscious action just might.
