When people talk about clean energy, they usually picture rows of solar panels or spinning wind turbines. But according to a recent article by Smith Noah on Jason Deegan’s site, Bill Gates sees things a little differently. He’s betting on Natrium—a next-gen nuclear technology that could reshape the energy game entirely.
Natrium isn’t your average nuclear reactor. It uses liquid sodium instead of water for cooling, which helps avoid some of the problems that traditional nuclear plants face. Liquid sodium can absorb a lot more heat, boosting efficiency and reducing the risk of radioactive leaks. It also works at lower pressures, making the reactors cheaper and supposedly safer.
The technology, developed by TerraPower (a company Gates helped start), is already being put to the test. The first plant is under construction in Wyoming, aiming to power 400,000 homes by 2030. It’s also designed to store energy with molten salt, making it a more stable backup for wind and solar sources when they’re not producing.
At just $1 billion per plant, Natrium could be a more affordable option than traditional reactors, which often cost tens of billions. But it’s still nuclear—and many eco-conscious communities remain understandably cautious. Past disasters like Fukushima left deep scars, and the idea of nuclear anything still raises red flags for many.
So while Gates’s plan could reduce fossil fuel use and offer low-carbon electricity, we have to ask: are we ready to trust another nuclear promise?

Support renewables when you can, cut down on waste, and keep questioning technologies that rely on mining, industrial cooling, and high-risk materials.
