The happiest city in the world right now isn’t in Finland — it’s Copenhagen. According to the Happy City Index released by the Institute for Quality of Life, Denmark’s capital tops the 2025 rankings thanks to its strong focus on sustainability, healthcare access, and overall quality of life. As Travel + Leisure writer Stacey Leasca highlights in her report (via Yahoo), Copenhagen leads not just in happiness, but in its commitment to creating a better, greener future.
What makes Copenhagen so joyful? The city excels in 82 key indicators that contribute to happiness, including universal healthcare, urban green spaces, and an average workweek of just 37 hours. Life expectancy there is 79.9 years, and every citizen has healthcare coverage. Add in a culture that encourages biking, plant-based eating, and climate action, and it’s no surprise residents report high satisfaction with life.
Copenhagen isn’t alone. Other top-ranking cities like Zurich, Singapore, and Aarhus (last year’s winner) also share strong environmental and social policies. But it’s the Danish capital’s blend of inclusive governance, green infrastructure, and community well-being that helped it top the list in 2025. The report notes that no city can guarantee lasting happiness, but celebrating progress — especially in sustainability and equity — is key to global improvement.
If American cities want to climb higher (New York came in at 17th, Minneapolis at 30th), investing in green public transport, plant-forward food systems, and community health could make all the difference.
It’s clear: happiness and sustainability go hand in hand. Let Copenhagen be your reminder that small, community-driven changes can lead to a happier, healthier world. Support local sustainability projects, opt for a bike ride over a car trip, and choose plant-based meals more often — because building a better planet starts with how we live today.
