An art installation in Denmark has been shut down after Animal rights activists rescued three piglets who were being deliberately starved to death. The exhibition, created by Chilean-born artist Marco Evaristti, aimed to protest the cruelty of industrial meat production. It featured three live piglets—named Lucia, Simon, and Benjamin—trapped inside a makeshift cage made from shopping trolleys and denied food and water.
According to Sky News, the animals were saved by activists with the help of Evaristti’s own friend, Caspar Steffensen. He admitted to letting the activists into the gallery after his 10-year-old daughter pleaded with him to protect the piglets. “She begged me to make sure the piggies won’t die,” Steffensen said.
Evaristti initially reported the animals stolen but later reconsidered his stance. “At least this way, the piglets would have a happy life,” he told reporters, acknowledging the backlash he received, including hate mail. He originally intended the work—titled And Now You Care—to highlight the brutal realities of pig farming in Denmark, where, according to Animal Protection Denmark, piglets frequently starve due to overcrowding and overbreeding.
Although he no longer plans to starve live animals, Evaristti says he still intends to revive the exhibition using dead piglets sourced from farms or slaughterhouses. He plans to display their bodies in a transparent refrigerator to symbolize the overcrowded and harsh conditions of modern livestock farming.
This story is a powerful reminder that cruelty isn’t art—and animals aren’t props. Instead of supporting industries that exploit animals, consider plant-based alternatives. Every choice we make, from what we eat to what we Support, can help build a kinder world for all living beings.
