New York has a rare chance to lead the way in marine animal protection—before it’s too late. A new bill (S7421/A8043) would ban octopus farming in the state before the industry even begins. This is our moment to stop a cruel and environmentally reckless practice in its tracks.
Octopuses are incredibly intelligent, sentient beings. Farming them in confined, unnatural conditions would cause extreme suffering and irreversible ecological damage. They require huge amounts of food—up to three times their body weight—putting pressure on wild fish stocks and marine ecosystems. The risks of disease, antibiotic runoff, and genetic Pollution are high.
This bill would make New York the first U.S. state to outlaw octopus farming. No farms exist yet—let’s keep it that way.
