According to The New York Times, Texas officials have declared the measles outbreak in West Texas officially over, with no new cases reported for 42 days—the standard for declaring an outbreak ended. The outbreak hospitalized nearly 100 people and killed two children, making it one of the deadliest measles resurgences in decades.
The news comes at a troubling time. Childhood vaccination rates in the U.S. are falling, with just 92.5 percent of kindergartners receiving their measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shots in the 2024–25 school year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that herd immunity requires at least 95 percent coverage, yet exemptions from vaccines are at record highs. In some parts of Texas, opt-out rates have reached double digits, leaving communities dangerously exposed.
Meanwhile, measles is far from gone. The Pan American Health Organization recently reported more than 10,000 cases across North America in 2025, with over a dozen deaths in Canada and Mexico. U.S. health officials say international travel and vulnerable populations could easily reignite outbreaks here if vaccination rates continue to slip.
Doctors also point to the damaging role of misinformation. Public figures have promoted unproven remedies like cod liver oil while casting vaccines as “personal choice,” discouraging some parents from timely care. In West Texas, that delay may have cost lives.
The lesson is clear: preventable diseases return when science is ignored. We can protect our families and communities by staying up to date on vaccinations, supporting schools with strong immunization policies, and pushing back against anti-science narratives. Choosing vaccination isn’t just about individual health—it’s about safeguarding everyone.
