According to a new report covered by The Guardian, chemical Pollution may pose as serious a threat to human and planetary health as Climate change—but it’s getting a fraction of the attention. The report, developed by Deep Science Ventures (DSV) and funded by the Grantham Foundation, warns that the public remains largely unaware of the thousands of synthetic chemicals contaminating everyday life—from packaging to personal care products.

The report highlights over 100 million “novel entity” chemicals created by industrial processes, with tens of thousands actively in commercial use. Of these, more than 3,600 synthetic chemicals used in food preparation and packaging have already been found in human bodies. Even more troubling, 80 of these are considered substances of significant concern. Common culprits include forever chemicals like PFAS, which now contaminate rainwater, food, and even our own bloodstreams.

What makes this especially dangerous is that many chemicals—particularly endocrine disruptors—can trigger harmful effects even at extremely low doses. Links to infertility, miscarriage, ADHD, liver damage, and cancer are growing more evident. Yet existing testing frameworks, often outdated and limited, fail to catch many of these dangers.

DSV’s report also emphasizes how consumer action can be part of the solution. While systemic regulation is lacking, demand for safer, transparent alternatives can help shift markets. That means choosing organic when possible, avoiding plastic food containers, and switching to safer cleaning and personal care products.

The takeaway is clear: our health is not guaranteed by current regulations. And while Climate change is rightly a priority, chemical pollution deserves urgent, equal attention—especially when it’s literally inside us.

If you care about your body, the planet, and future generations, rethink what you’re buying, cooking with, and putting on your skin. Choose glass and cast iron over plastic, shop organic when you can, and Support brands that put health and sustainability first, and don’t forget to go vegan!
