A troubling scene has unfolded in Iraq’s Ibn Najm marsh, northeast of Najaf, where dead fish have been discovered in large numbers, floating lifeless on the water’s surface. According to Al Jazeera, Iraqi authorities have launched an urgent investigation into this latest mass die-off—one of several similar events in recent years.
While the exact cause has yet to be confirmed, early theories include a sharp drop in oxygen levels caused by low river flow, accelerated evaporation, and rising temperatures—all signs of worsening Climate change impacts in the region. Jamal Abd Zeid, the Najaf governorate’s environmental chief, confirmed that a technical team is now examining whether human practices like electrical fishing and the use of chemical poisons might be to blame.
Environmental activist Jassim al-Assadi suggested agricultural pesticides could be a hidden culprit, adding that repeated poisoning events can have compounding effects. “It is dangerous for public health, as well as for the food chain,” he warned.
The Iraqi marshlands, part of a once-thriving wetland ecosystem, have been under siege for years by climate-fueled droughts and upstream damming from neighboring countries like Iran and Turkiye. These combined pressures are drying up life-critical waterways and devastating biodiversity.
As fish die-offs like this become more common, they serve as a stark reminder of what’s at stake. The death of fish isn’t just an environmental issue—it’s a signal of deeper ecological collapse and human harm.
We need to shift away from polluting practices, industrial poisons, and animal-dependent food systems. Let this tragedy in Iraq’s wetlands be a wake-up call. Choose plant-based, Support Conservation, and speak up for stronger protections—before we lose even more.
