After over 500 days in a New York animal shelter, Jeremy, a friendly black pit bull, is showing signs of distress as he waits for a forever home. He was found near a 7-Eleven on Long Island in July 2023 and brought to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, where staff quickly noticed his playful, eager-to-learn nature. Jeremy has mastered commands like “sit” and “paw,” and he enjoys long walks and squeaky toys.
Despite his friendly personality, the lengthy stay is taking a toll on Jeremy. Shelter staff report that he’s pacing, looking stressed, and even losing patches of fur due to the strain of shelter life. “He’s been at the shelter over a year, and it is starting to impact him negatively,” a spokesperson shared.
Although Jeremy would thrive in a home, potential adopters may be hesitant because he needs to be the only pet and, as a large black pit bull, may face bias. Still, the shelter is committed to finding him a loving family, hoping his time in the kennel ends soon.
