Heroic Shelter Dog Saves Family from Devastating Fire

great pyrenees

A shelter dog on a temporary visit to a family in Portsmouth, Virginia, has emerged as an unlikely hero, saving them from a devastating fire. This inspiring incident not only highlights the capacity of dogs to sense danger and protect their loved ones but also sheds light on the crucial role of animal adoption programs.

The heart of this story lies within the Paws Around Portsmouth program, a commendable initiative by the Portsmouth Humane Society. This program allows families to take shelter dogs for outings and even short-term stays. For Chris Cushna, Sheila Janes, and their children, Anya, Logan, and granddaughter Luna, welcoming Moose, a Great Pyrenees, into their lives was an unexpected turn of events that would change their lives forever.

Moose’s journey from shelter to hero began with a seemingly ordinary outing—a day filled with baths, treats, and bonding. Little did the family know that Moose’s extraordinary courage and intuition would soon be put to the test.

On the morning of August 6th, a fire broke out in the Tidewater Yacht Marina where Cushna and Janes were staying with Moose. In the early hours of the morning, while most were still asleep, Moose’s heightened senses detected the impending danger. Swiftly and effectively, Moose roused her human companions from slumber, alerting them.

The quick action taken by Moose proved to be critical, as flames rapidly consumed a neighboring boat and posed a direct threat to the family’s vessel. In a matter of minutes, Moose’s vigilant actions ensured the family’s safe evacuation, sparing them from the potential tragedy that could have befallen them had they not been alerted in time.

The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of rescue and adoption programs, as well as the profound impact animals can have on our lives. The family, despite losing their possessions in the fire, found solace in the fact that their Moose had ultimately saved their lives.

The heartwarming response from the community further exemplifies the incredible bond that exists between humans and animals. A GoFundMe campaign, aptly titled “Hero dog saves Portsmouth family,” was established to help the family recover from their loss. The overwhelming Support garnered by the campaign reflects the genuine appreciation for Moose’s act of bravery and the compassion that flows within the community.

Today, Moose lives with her new adopted mom in the very neighborhood where she became a hero.
