Coming Together to Support Animals Affected by Maui Wildfires

The picturesque island of Maui, renowned for its stunning landscape, is currently grappling with a devastating wildfire crisis that has left both human and animal lives in turmoil. As the wildfires continue to blaze through parts of the island, the animal shelters in Maui are facing an unprecedented challenge in caring for the pets affected by the catastrophe. The Hawaiian Humane Society and the Maui Humane Society, at the forefront of animal welfare efforts, have urgently reached out to the public for assistance.

In a heartfelt plea on social media, the Maui Humane Society revealed the dire situation they are confronting. Even before the wildfires struck, the shelter was already stretched to its capacity, and the fires have only exacerbated the issue. The shelter is now in desperate need of space, supplies, and foster families to accommodate the incoming wave of animals who are suffering from burns, or smoke inhalation, or have been separated from their families due to the chaotic evacuation process.

Animal lovers on the island of Maui have been called upon to come together during this crisis. The Maui Humane Society is urging residents to open their homes to foster pets in their care, thereby freeing up space for incoming animals. For those unable to foster, the organization suggests donating pet supplies and funds. Recognizing that compassion knows no geographic boundaries, individuals living outside of Maui can contribute by sending supplies through the shelter’s Amazon Wishlist or by making donations directly on the Maui Humane Society’s website.

In the face of adversity, communities are displaying remarkable solidarity. The Hawaiian Humane Society has echoed the sentiments of the Maui Humane Society, emphasizing the importance of donations to provide much-needed medical attention to injured and traumatized pets.

But Support is not limited to financial aid alone. The Maui Humane Society has taken a proactive step by establishing the “Maui Fires Pets Help Group” on Facebook, designed to connect individuals who can offer assistance to those in need. This platform serves as a hub for sharing information about missing pets, available resources, and practical ways the local community can collaborate to alleviate the crisis. Amidst the chaos, this group stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the willingness to lend a helping hand in times of need.

As the fires continue to rage and the island grapples with the extent of the devastation, the leadership and compassion displayed by the Hawaiian Humane Society and the Maui Humane Society are an inspiration to us all.
