The US government has promised that it is working tirelessly to find the 5-month-old infant that disappeared during the Afghanistan evacuations.
The infant’s parents have not seen him since handing the baby over to an American service member in August during the Afghanistan evacuations.
The Taliban was trying to keep evacuees from escaping, which is when the couple handed their 2-month-old over to an American service member offering to help. Once they got to the other side to evacuate, the service member and their baby were gone.
The family was relocated to the US, where they now live but are growingly concerned over the welfare of their 5-month-old baby.
A spokesperson for the State Department, said, “We are committed to ensuring the protection of unaccompanied children. We are working with our international partners and the international community to explore every avenue to locate the child, which includes an international amber alert that was issued through the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children.”
There is supposed to be a system for reuniting lost children with their parents during situations like these. However, the Afghanistan evacuation was so rushed that the process is backed up, resulting in an unknown number of children lost without their legal guardians.
We can only hope that this baby is reunited with his family as soon as possible and that he has been well cared for.
