According to The Guardian, wealthy nations are losing momentum in tackling the climate crisis, even as countries like China surge ahead with clean energy innovation. André Corrêa do Lago, Brazil’s top diplomat and president of this year’s COP30 climate conference in Belém, warned that while the global north is slowing down, the global south is stepping up.

China, now the world’s largest producer and consumer of renewable energy, is driving down the cost of solar panels and green tech for everyone. “China is coming up with solutions that are for everyone, not just China,” Corrêa do Lago said, highlighting how affordable solar energy is reshaping the fight against Climate change. Meanwhile, major Western economies — including the U.S., the UK, and Australia — are falling short of their methane reduction promises made at COP26, with emissions from oil and gas operations actually increasing.

Methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide, accounts for roughly a third of Global warming. Scientists have long called cutting methane the “emergency brake” humanity needs to avoid catastrophic heating, but progress has been painfully slow. Data from satellite firm Kayrros shows emissions from top signatories of the Global Methane Pledge are now 8.5% above 2020 levels, despite vows to slash them by 30% by 2030.

At COP30, developing nations are demanding renewed urgency — especially funding and binding commitments to phase out fossil fuels. The target of limiting warming to 1.5°C, once seen as ambitious but achievable, is now hanging by a thread.

The solution isn’t just political — it’s personal. Shifting toward renewable energy, cutting back on animal products, and supporting plant-based choices all help lower emissions and protect the planet we share.
