According to The Guardian, more than 5,000 fossil fuel lobbyists have gained access to United Nations climate summits over the past four years — a shocking figure that highlights just how deeply oil, gas, and coal companies are embedded in the very negotiations meant to end dependence on them. The research, conducted by the coalition Kick Big Polluters Out, shows these lobbyists represented nearly 860 organizations tied to the fossil fuel supply chain, from exploration to distribution.
The same 90 corporations responsible for over half of global oil and gas production also account for almost two-thirds of upcoming extraction projects, according to the Global Oil and Gas Exit List. Together, they’re planning to produce enough oil to cover seven European countries in a one-centimeter-thick layer. It’s an image as surreal as it is horrifying — a literal coating of Pollution smothering the Earth.
While Indigenous communities continue to fight for their lands and lives, representatives from companies like ExxonMobil, BP, and Shell stroll through the climate conferences, buying influence under the banner of “dialogue.” Activists say this corporate infiltration turns spaces meant for environmental protection into “carbon business halls,” where profit, not the planet, takes priority.
The upcoming COP30 in Brazil’s Amazon region is already facing criticism for the presence of fossil fuel interests. As the rainforest — one of the Earth’s most vital carbon sinks — is razed for oil and agriculture, the contradiction couldn’t be starker. Transparency rules introduced this year are a start, but advocates argue disclosure isn’t enough. Without removing corporate polluters from the table, global climate talks risk becoming greenwashing showcases instead of engines for real change.
It’s time to reclaim these spaces for science, people, and the planet. Support organizations pushing for fossil-free climate policy, choose renewable energy, and shift toward a plant-based lifestyle that aligns with the health of our shared home — the Earth.
