What was once the dirtiest part of our energy system is now becoming the foundation for something cleaner. Across the globe, decommissioned fossil-fuel power plants are being repurposed into renewable energy sites. As The Economist reports, the Tamaya power station in Chile’s Atacama desert once ran on diesel but has been reborn as a solar farm paired with battery storage.
The transition makes sense: old fossil plants often already have valuable infrastructure, including transmission lines and grid connections. By reusing these sites, renewable projects can come online faster and with lower costs than building entirely new facilities. In Chile, the French utility Engie converted its plant earlier this year, turning a polluting generator into what its local boss describes as a place where “the past and future of energy infrastructure meet.”
This model is spreading far beyond South America. In Europe and the U.S., coal and oil plants are also being converted into solar, wind, and storage hubs. By leveraging existing infrastructure, the industry avoids costly grid expansions and makes use of industrial land that might otherwise sit idle. For communities, this means new jobs in the clean energy sector can replace the fossil-era employment that once anchored local economies.
The shift is also a powerful symbol. Repurposing fossil infrastructure highlights how quickly the environment can benefit when outdated systems are reimagined. Instead of leaving behind stranded assets, utilities can give new life to old sites while accelerating the renewable transition.
Still, scaling up won’t be without challenges. Some fossil plants are located far from areas rich in solar or wind resources. Others may require expensive upgrades to handle variable renewable power. But the principle remains strong: the skeletons of the fossil age can be recycled into the backbone of the clean energy era.
