The fossil fuel era may finally be fading, and it’s not just about climate anymore—it’s about economics. According to a new report covered by The Guardian, over 90% of renewable energy projects worldwide are now cheaper than fossil fuels. Solar is already about 41% cheaper than the cheapest fossil fuel option, while onshore wind costs less than half as much.

UN Secretary General António Guterres is calling this a “climate breakthrough,” saying, “The sun is rising on a clean energy age.” Speaking in New York, Guterres made a clear call: countries must ditch fossil fuels and back renewables—not just for the planet, but for people’s wallets and safety. “There are no price spikes for sunlight. No embargos on wind,” he said.

Investment trends are already shifting. In 2024, $2 trillion flowed into clean energy—$800 billion more than fossil fuels. But challenges remain. Infrastructure is lagging behind, especially electric grids, which are receiving far less investment than generation. And countries like the U.S., China, and India are still supporting coal, oil, and gas, despite the growing cost and climate risks.

Guterres warned that rising demand from AI data centers and cooling systems in a heating world could tip us past the 1.5°C climate target—unless that energy is 100% renewable. That’s why he and global experts are urging world leaders to lock in stronger national plans ahead of the Cop30 summit this November.

We have the technology, we have the money—now we need the will. Let’s not waste this momentum.

Let’s use our power as consumers and citizens to demand a fossil-free future. Support renewables, vote for green leaders, and say no to the industries fueling the climate crisis. The clean energy revolution isn’t just possible—it’s already happening.
