As the world edges closer to Cop29, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning about the imminent risks of a catastrophic climate breakdown. Highlighting that global temperatures are on track to surpass the critical 1.5°C (2.7°F) threshold above pre-industrial levels, Guterres emphasized the urgency of decisive action to avert irreversible damage to our planet.

Guterres pointed to alarming signs such as the potential collapse of the Amazon rainforest and the Greenland ice sheet, which could trigger irreversible tipping points. He criticized governments for their insufficient efforts in cutting greenhouse gas emissions, stating that current measures fall far short of what is needed to keep Global warming within safe limits.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, Guterres expressed concern over the possibility of the United States withdrawing from the Paris Agreement again under a new administration. While he remains hopeful that the accord will survive, he cautioned that such a move could severely undermine global climate efforts.
New research underscores the fragility of natural carbon sinks, with forests, plants, and soil barely absorbing any carbon in 2023—the hottest year on record. This decline threatens the foundational efforts of decarbonization, as scientists warn that the Earth’s systems are losing their resilience.
Guterres called for enhanced global coordination to address interconnected environmental crises, linking the fight against Climate change with the preservation of biodiversity. He stressed the necessity of reducing emissions by 9% annually, a target that remains unmet with a recent 1.3% increase.
As governments convene in Baku, Azerbaijan, to discuss climate finance for COP29, Guterres urged nations, especially major oil producers like the UAE and Saudi Arabia, to contribute more significantly to funding efforts. He also highlighted the need to phase out fossil fuels entirely to preserve the possibility of limiting Global warming to 1.5°C.
“The risk of these tipping points accelerating climate change is something that must be taken very seriously,” Guterres stated. “It is absolutely essential to act now.”
