As the world faces a looming climate catastrophe in what could be the hottest year on record, the UN’s Climate Ambition Summit convened by Secretary-General António Guterres has drawn more than 100 national governments to New York. These nations are expected to present renewed climate action plans and strategies to combat global warming while adapting to its consequences.

However, notably absent from the summit are leaders from the world’s two largest carbon emitters, the United States President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron are also missing from the event. This dearth of participation has raised concerns about the lack of global leadership in tackling the climate crisis.
Sir David King, the UK’s former chief scientific adviser and founder of the Climate Crisis Advisory Group, expressed frustration, stating, “We are not seeing the leadership we need. This is the biggest challenge civilization has ever faced, and yet we can’t get the response we need.”
The summit comes in the wake of a scathing critique by Guterres, who accused world leaders of falling “abysmally short” in their efforts to curb global heating. A recent UN analysis indicates that countries’ actions to reduce emissions are insufficient to meet agreed-upon temperature limits, leading to more extreme heatwaves, droughts, and floods.
Climate advocates hope the summit will result in commitments to reduce emissions, phase out fossil fuel subsidies, and increase assistance to vulnerable countries. However, the absence of major emitters and geopolitical tensions have cast a shadow over the event.
Alden Meyer, an expert in international climate negotiations, remarked on the disconnect between Guterres’ call for action and national leaders’ willingness to deliver, stating, “It’s an embarrassing gap. National leaders are just pointing fingers at each other over the lack of progress.”
President Biden addressed the climate crisis in his UN speech, acknowledging the urgency of the situation. While his administration has taken steps to promote renewable energy, critics argue that permitting new oil and gas projects and failing to declare a climate emergency undercut his climate commitments.
In New York, Climate Week has been showcasing technological solutions to address the climate crisis, and Prince William unveiled 15 finalists for the Earthshot Prize, recognizing innovative ideas to help the environment. Despite the challenges, there remains hope for positive change and innovative solutions to combat Climate change.
