In a compelling plea on the eve of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the alarming rate of land degradation that threatens global prosperity and ecological balance. According to Guterres, an astounding 40% of the Earth’s land is degraded, exacerbating environmental crises such as desertification, drought, and land degradation—urgent issues that demand immediate global attention.

With the world’s population expanding and current habits straining our natural resources, Guterres underscored that every second, the equivalent of four football fields of fertile land is lost. This degradation not only poses a direct threat to food security, providing 95% of the global food supply, but also impacts clothing, housing, and the livelihoods of billions.
This year’s theme for the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is “United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future,” emphasizing the importance of sustainable land management as a foundational step towards ensuring our planet’s health and humanity’s prosperity. Guterres urged a unified approach to land stewardship, calling on governments, businesses, academics, and communities to come together for a sustainable transformation.
Highlighting the disproportionate impact on developing regions, Guterres pointed out that over one billion young people, particularly those in countries reliant on natural resources, face the brunt of these challenges. He advocated for enhancing job opportunities in rural areas through eco-entrepreneurship, which can lead to sustainable community development and slow the trend of forced migration due to environmental degradation.
As we commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, Guterres is rallying nations to accelerate their efforts. With the upcoming UNCCD Conference of States Parties (COP16) in Riyadh, there is a pressing need to incorporate young voices in policy-making processes to ensure a resilient future.
In conclusion, the UN chief’s message is clear: concerted, global efforts are essential to halt the vandalism of Earth’s land and foster an environment where nature and humanity can thrive together.
