Recent data indicates a significant shift: the number of days exceeding 30°C has tripled in recent decades, and 2022 marked the second warmest year on record since 1884. Additionally, extremely wet days have become 20% more frequent compared to the period between 1961 and 1990, and sea levels at Newlyn in Cornwall reached their highest since 1916.

Sunil Amrith, a history professor at Yale’s School of Environment, emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about Climate change. “Any effort to highlight its causes and effects plays a crucial role,” he asserts. However, meteorologists like Alex Burkill from the Met Office point out challenges in integrating climate discussions into daily forecasts. Time constraints on broadcasts make it difficult to delve into complex climate attribution, and viewers primarily seek immediate weather information.
Burkill also notes the scientific caution required when attributing specific weather events directly to Climate change. “We’ve always had extremes—high temperatures, heavy rains, strong winds,” he explains. “While a changing climate makes these events more likely, definitively linking them in a brief forecast is challenging.” For more in-depth analyses, the Met Office directs the public to its YouTube channel and app, where extended discussions are possible.
Advancements in climate attribution studies are helping scientists better understand the links between extreme weather and Global warming. Nonetheless, he expresses worries about the misuse of AI to spread misinformation or alter forecasts maliciously.
Amid these developments, meteorologists face the additional hurdle of skepticism on social media, often confronting harsh criticism from Climate change deniers. Despite these challenges, the push to make the public more aware of the climate crisis remains a critical endeavor for scientists and forecasters alike.
