West Hollywood’s City Council recently voted unanimously to support the Plant Based Treaty. This endorsement, led by Vice Mayor Chelsea Byers, reflects a strong commitment to addressing climate change and reducing the city’s carbon footprint. The Council’s resolution calls on the U.S. government and other nations to take similar steps toward creating a Global Plant Based Treaty.
In their resolution, the council highlighted the significant climate benefits of plant-based diets, emphasizing that plant-based meals have a notably lower carbon footprint than those derived from animal products. The city’s dedication to climate action is longstanding, with efforts like the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP), which aims for carbon neutrality by 2035, further underscoring this commitment.
The council’s recent resolution builds on a previous initiative introduced earlier in the year, requiring plant-based food as the default at city-sponsored events. This initiative aims to promote healthier, sustainable food choices while supporting local businesses. According to the city, this simple shift could significantly impact community health and sustainability, demonstrating a model that other municipalities might follow.
The movement for plant-based policies is gaining traction in California and beyond. Los Angeles endorsed the Plant Based Treaty in 2022, joining a global network of cities supporting similar measures, including Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and Belfast. The Plant Based Treaty organization celebrated West Hollywood’s decision, noting that the city’s commitment to “creating a better future” sets a new standard for environmental action at the municipal level.
