Amsterdam has made history and become the first capital city in the European Union to endorse a global Plant-Based Treaty. This treaty, which aims to mitigate the environmental impact of the food system on climate change, marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and compassionate future.

The City of Amsterdam Council recognizes the profound influence of the food system on both human and animal health, as well as its contribution to the pressing climate crisis. In response, the council has unveiled ambitious plans to transition the city towards a plant-based diet, aiming to increase the proportion of plant-based protein consumption from 40 to 60 percent by the year 2030.

Central to this initiative is the municipality’s commitment to driving systemic changes in the food system, ensuring that all residents have access to nutritious, equitable, and sustainable food options. This vision aligns with the council’s adoption of a motion proposed by the Party for the Animals, advocating for Amsterdam to embrace its identity as a “Plant-Based Capital.”

To realize this vision, Amsterdam has outlined several key measures:

  1. Availability of Plant-Based Meals: Publicly funded institutions will now offer plant-based meal options, promoting inclusivity and sustainability in public dining spaces.
  2. Vegan Friday Initiative: An innovative initiative that encourages individuals and institutions to adopt plant-based diets by dedicating Fridays to consuming vegan meals.
  3. Commitment to 60% Plant-Based Protein: Caterers across the city will adhere to a minimum requirement of serving 60% plant-based protein, in line with the council’s ambitious targets.
  4. Annual Plant-Based Conference: This is a yearly platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration, aimed at fostering innovation and best practices in promoting plant-based diets across public institutions.

Amsterdam‘s endorsement of the Plant-Based Treaty adds to a growing global momentum towards sustainable food systems. Notably, 25 municipal governments worldwide, including Los Angeles, Edinburgh, Exmouth, and Lambeth, have thrown their weight behind this transformative initiative.

This isn’t the first time Amsterdam has embraced the principles of plant-based living. In 2021, the city laid the groundwork for its current initiatives by pledging to encourage citizens to adopt plant-based diets. Measures included increasing the availability of sustainable and healthy food options, particularly in underserved neighborhoods and public institutions like schools.
