Belfast has set a historic precedent by becoming the first city in Ireland to endorse a global Plant-Based Treaty. This campaign, aimed at mitigating the impacts of Climate change, emphasizes a transition towards plant-based diets as a key solution.
The motion was championed by Councillor Paul Doherty, renowned for his efforts in making Belfast a Right to Food City, dedicated to eradicating hunger. Doherty highlighted the city’s progress in enhancing food accessibility through initiatives like breakfast clubs and sees endorsing the Plant-Based Treaty as a pivotal step forward.
With the motion’s successful passage, Belfast City Council is poised to engage the Northern Ireland Assembly, urging broader commitment to the treaty and the adoption of a plant-based food system. The treaty advocates for halting land use change and ecosystem degradation associated with animal agriculture, alongside ecosystem restoration and transitioning away from animal-based food systems.
Joining the ranks of five other UK councils and major global cities like Amsterdam and Los Angeles, Belfast’s endorsement underscores its dedication to combating Climate change. Councillor Doherty stresses the urgency, noting, “By changing the way we consume food and shifting to a healthier and more sustainable diet, we can make a real impact on dealing with the climate crisis.”
