Reddit Bans Pro-Trump Subreddit on Hate Speech

Reddit banned pro-Donald Trump subreddit on June 29, in a move against hate speech on the platform. The company said it had banned the largest pro-Trump message board on the site.

Reddit said in a statement that the message board, called “The_Donald,” had “consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average” and had not complied with the company’s tries to bring the group into compliance with Reddit’s rules. Over 750,000 people were subscribed to the subreddit. The content of the subreddit included memes, viral videos or supportive messages related to President Trump, his campaign and presidency.

“Reddit is a place for community and belonging, not for attacking people,” Steve Huffman, the company’s chief executive, said in a call with reporters. “‘The_Donald’ has been in violation of that.”

The group had previously been placed under “quarantine” by Reddit for repeated harassment, bigotry, and hate speech. The quarantine was the consequence of frequent rules violations, including “encouragement of violence towards police officers and public officials in Oregon.” By the time the ban was handed down, the board was mostly inactive. Reddit’s enforcement on hate speech also included about 2,000 other communities.

“To be clear, views across the political spectrum are allowed on Reddit – but all communities must work within our policies and do so in good faith, without exception,”  Huffman wrote in a post announcing the policy change. The post also included eight new rules and terms that Reddit users must follow, including posting sexual content related to children, illicit transactions and illegal substances trafficking.
