Penny’s story starts like millions of other pigs destined for slaughter, but thankfully, has a happier ending. Sadly, the only time pigs raised in the meat industry get to see sunlight is in the transport truck to the slaughterhouse, after spending their entire lives in a crate that doesn’t even allow them the opportunity to turn around. It’s a horrific existence, but Penny is one of the lucky ones that will now know love and kindness after falling out of a transport truck.
When Penny just a baby, small enough to fit in hand, she traumatically fell off a transport truck on a busy interstate. Miraculously, a kind person stopped to pick the little one up and immediately brought Penny to a friend who was versed in caring for animals. Penny was gently raised by a woman who did everything for her, but she knew the piglet would have to find a new home since she was continuing to grow.
Way to go, Penny! Unfortunately, pigs often get a bad reputation as being dirty, stupid animals but in reality, they are incredibly intelligent and emotional beings. Scientists have determined that not only are pigs smart, but they are smarter than dogs, some primates, and three-year-old children. They are ranked as the fourth most intelligent creature on earth!
The Gentle Barn is a unique animal rescue that it takes in mostly unwanted and difficult to place animals.
