A pigeon’s eight-month ordeal in Indian custody, suspected of espionage for China, came to an end this week after intervention from the Animal rights organization PETA. The dramatic saga unfolded in Mumbai, where the bird was captured near a port last May. The pigeon had markings that appeared to be Chinese characters, triggering suspicion and prompting authorities to seize it for investigation.

According to PETA, the pigeon’s detainment raised concerns regarding its welfare and rights. Held at the Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals (BSDPHA) in Parel, the bird became a focal point of attention as its case lingered for an astonishing length of time. With the animal’s freedom in jeopardy, PETA mobilized efforts to secure his release.
This incident is not the first of its kind in India. In 2016, another pigeon made headlines when it was apprehended with a threatening note aimed at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Such occurrences shed light on the peculiar intersection of animal behavior and geopolitical tensions.
Questions remain about the nature of “spy animals” and their utilization by various militaries. While the notion may seem surreal, historical accounts reveal many instances where animals have been trained or exploited for intelligence-gathering purposes.
