According to CNN, hotter summers are driving a rush to install more air conditioning worldwide. The International Energy Agency warns that, without major efficiency gains, energy demand for space cooling could more than triple by 2050, putting even more stress on grids and the planet.

That is a problem because most units still run on vapor compression systems. They push chemical refrigerants through a compressor to move heat. Those refrigerants can leak, and some of them trap far more heat than carbon dioxide. Even small leaks add up.

A Brooklyn based startup called MIMiC Systems wants to skip the compressor entirely. Its approach uses thermoelectric materials to move heat using electrons inside solid components. In simple terms, it cools without volatile refrigerant gases. It also has no moving parts, which could mean fewer repairs, less material waste, and lower lifetime costs.

MIMiC is building modular units sized for individual rooms or apartments. The company says that lets buildings add cooling like Lego blocks instead of installing one giant system. A first pilot system went into an apartment in Vancouver in August 2025, supporting a person living with a spinal cord injury.

This matters for public health during extreme heat, and it also matters for animals, wildlife, and pets that struggle when indoor spaces overheat. Cleaner cooling can protect vulnerable communities while reducing Pollution that harms the environment and ecosystems.

New tech alone will not fix everything. We also need better building design, tighter leak standards, and faster clean energy. Still, cutting super polluting refrigerants feels like a practical win. Choose efficient cooling, and back policies that keep our home comfortable and vegan, plant based, and climate minded.
