Imagine a world without trees. No forests cooling the air, no shade during heatwaves, no roots holding soil or leaves filtering Pollution. Wildlife disappears, rivers dry faster, and cities become hotter and harsher. This is no longer a distant idea. According to the first Global Tree Assessment, 38 percent of the world’s tree species are now at risk of extinction.
Scientists assessed more than 58,000 tree species across 192 countries and found over 16,000 are threatened. Trees now make up more than a quarter of all species on the IUCN Red List, with more threatened tree species than birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians combined. This crisis harms the environment, human health, animals, and climate stability.
Yet there is still hope. Trees can recover when protected. Reforestation, habitat protection, and Indigenous-led stewardship work. UNEP must lead coordinated global action now. Sign the petition now to protect trees. Sign the petition now to defend ecosystems. Sign the petition now for a livable planet.
