Most of us buy supplements hoping to protect our long term health. Yet a growing number of neurologists say the wrong mix can do the opposite. According to Parade, the bigger risk is not one magic pill. It is taking high dose nutrients in messy combinations, or using pills instead of getting real medical care.

One warning sign is quality. One neurologist told Parade that many brain focused products do not match their labels. Some list ingredients that are not detected. Others contain compounds that are not disclosed. That is scary for anyone, but it is especially risky for people on blood thinners, antidepressants, or blood pressure meds.

Doctors also flag a few common stacks. Fish oil paired with ginkgo, garlic, or turmeric can raise bleeding risk in some people. Multiple stimulants can worsen anxiety and insomnia, which chips away at sleep. And sleep is not optional for a healthy brain. Unregulated psychoactive products can be even worse, especially when mixed.

Then there is the myth that more is better. A large prostate cancer trial found that vitamin E supplementation was linked with higher prostate cancer risk in men in follow up results from SELECT. That does not mean food is the enemy. It means the bottle is not a shortcut.

There is a practical takeaway that also fits the environment. Start with basics that help your brain and the planet. Eat more fiber rich whole foods. Try a plant based pattern, move your body, and protect sleep. Keep supplements away from curious pets, too. If you still want pills, bring the full list to your clinician and ask what you truly need.

Choose food first, waste less, and let care for the Earth start on your plate.
