A new study from the American Chemical Society reveals a disturbing discovery — the fluids used in hospital intravenous (IV) infusions contain thousands of microplastics. According to Environment & Health, researchers found that plastic IV pouches shed microscopic particles, which are then directly infused into patients’ bloodstreams. In a single 8.4-ounce (250 ml) bag, an estimated 7,500 microplastics were detected — and for some treatments requiring multiple bags, that number could reach more than 50,000.

The scientists, led by Liwu Zhang and Ventsislav Kolev Valev, examined commercial IV saline solutions from two major brands. After filtering the contents, they discovered fragments made of polypropylene — the same material used to manufacture the bags themselves. The results suggest that friction, ultraviolet light, and heat can cause the packaging to shed tiny bits of plastic, which end up entering the human body during infusion.

While there’s still limited research on how microplastics affect health, the presence of these particles in medical equipment raises urgent questions about safety. Previous studies have shown microplastics in drinking water, seafood, and even human lungs, but this is among the first to document a direct bloodstream pathway. Researchers warn that the particles could accumulate in tissues or trigger inflammation, underscoring the need for new filtration systems and sustainable alternatives.

Experts suggest storing IV bags away from heat and light to reduce plastic shedding, but they also emphasize that the real solution lies in redesigning medical materials entirely — shifting toward biodegradable or plant-based alternatives. As we continue to discover just how pervasive plastic has become in our environment and bodies, these findings remind us how critical it is to reduce our dependence on single-use materials.

Protecting the Earth means protecting ourselves. Choosing reusable, sustainable, and vegan-friendly products in daily life helps build momentum for a cleaner, safer future for all.
