In a startling turn of events, the owner of three zebras that had previously escaped in Maryland has been charged with animal cruelty. Jerry Lee Holly, a 76-year-old resident of Upper Marlboro, found himself facing the wrath of the law after one of the escaped zebras was tragically found dead in an illegal snare trap.

The curious case began in August when three zebras managed to escape from Holly’s farm. These escaped zebras, part of a group sometimes referred to as a ‘zeal’, not only captured local media attention but also became quite the sensation among Maryland residents. The zebras could be seen strolling through neighborhoods, crossing streets, and even parading near railroad tracks. To many, they became local celebrities, their movements closely tracked and shared on social media.

However, the situation took a dark turn when one zebra was found dead in a trap just outside Holly’s enclosure. Further investigations revealed that the animal most likely succumbed to dehydration after being stuck for several days. Another zebra was found dead inside the farm’s boundaries, having been deceased long enough to enter rigor mortis.

Prince George’s County prosecutors have now charged Holly with three counts of animal cruelty. He is accused of failing to provide proper care, including food and shelter, to his zebras. Each count carries a potential penalty of 90 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

While the remaining zebras have managed to adapt to life in the Maryland suburbs, far from their native African grasslands, the question remains: Why was Holly keeping such wild animals in Maryland? Records reveal Holly has housed a variety of wild animals on his farm over the years, from kangaroos to monkeys.

This case is a poignant reminder of the responsibilities that come with caring for animals, especially those not native to the area. While the escaped zebras may have provided a brief spectacle for Maryland residents, their plight highlights the need for proper and humane treatment of all animals.
