There are moments that stay with you long after you’ve walked away, and for one Chicago resident, a freezing winter night left an impression that months couldn’t erase. Coming across a homeless man and his cat on a bitterly cold evening, the passerby was struck by a painful reality: both human and animal were vulnerable, yet the resources to help either one felt frustratingly out of reach in that moment.
The cat, leashed to a milk crate with only a thin blanket for warmth, was visibly shut down and shivering. The man, despite his circumstances, clearly loved her. That combination, deep affection paired with an inability to provide adequate care, is something many compassionate people encounter and struggle to navigate. Should you try to take the animal to safety? Is it ethical to offer money in exchange for a beloved pet when someone is in a desperate situation? These are genuinely hard questions, and sitting with discomfort rather than acting impulsively is sometimes the wiser first step.
According to The New York Times Ethicist, offering to purchase the cat could have crossed into exploitative territory, leveraging a vulnerable person’s hardship rather than addressing it. When someone’s options are severely constrained, a transaction that might look mutual on the surface can actually cause deeper harm. The good news is that there are better paths forward that honor both the person and the pet.
Organizations like the ASPCA and nonprofits specifically dedicated to the pets of unhoused individuals exist precisely for situations like this. A single phone call can bring in trained professionals with the expertise, supplies, and wellness resources to help a person keep their companion animal safe and cared for without forcing anyone to give up something they love. Supporting these cause driven organizations through donations or volunteering means that the next person who encounters a scene like this has a real, humane option to turn to.
When the environment is harsh and resources are scarce, compassion means looking for solutions that protect everyone involved, not just the one we find it easiest to advocate for.
