AniMeals No-Kill Adoption Center and Animal Food Bank discovered seventy-one cats trapped under the Reserve Street Bridge in Missoula, Montana.

When these poor babies were brought into the center, some of them were in pretty rough shape. The adoption center has already spent over $15,000 so far in medical costs getting these cats ready for adoption, draining the shelter’s budget. Many of these cats from under the bridge had experienced trauma from being abandoned and had a hard time trusting again. However, the shelter is so thankful that they found them, and everyone involved is confident that they will blossom in foster care.

“This project has consumed much of our time, energy, and thoughts. We are grateful that we are in a position where we can help these cats, however, how do you ensure the cycle doesn’t happen again? How can we be proactive instead of reactive? We are trying to create a better life for the cats in our community, not just the cats in our care,” said AniMeals adoption center in a Facebook post.

AniMeals is currently considering creating a Pets of Displaced Individuals Outreach Program with the goal of outreaching to the community to help vaccinate, fix, and microchip the pets of displaced individuals, and individuals struggling to do these things. This would help ensure that this story doesn’t repeat itself.

“Our hope is to help control the population of cats in Missoula in a safe and sustainable way. By providing a safe, and reliable resource for individuals and their pets, we can help prevent the growth of large colonies like the one under the Reserve Street Bridge,” Animeals said.

With 7.6 million animals being abandoned on the streets and shelters in this country every year, shelters and rescue groups that house and feed these struggling animals are vital to their wellbeing. You can donate to Animeals here, and help them to supplement the food needs of these homeless animals, which frees up precious dollars for other critical needs, like medicine and surgeries. You can also consider sponsoring an animal to help cover the cost of getting the cats ready for adoption!
