If you’re a pet parent, then you probably have a tough time coming to terms with the fact that there are currently 70 million stray animals in the United States. And while we don’t even want to think about how many of those were once pets who had homes, the sad truth is that pet abandonment happens all too often. The most heartbreaking part is most animal companions are so loyal that they won’t even want to leave the last place they saw their caretaker. Combo, the dog in the video, was spotted wandering the streets of Greece. Plagued by leishmaniasis, ehrlichia, and mange matted fur, and ticks from being on his own for so long, the woman who found him did the right thing and brought him to Save a Greek Stray.
What breaks our hearts is that as the clinic shaved the matted fur from little Combo’s body, they discovered crude stitches at the base of his neck, which is where he had been microchipped. This means that Combo’s abandonment was planned — and his caretaker wanted to do everything possible to be sure that they would never see this poor pup again. But being abandoned couldn’t keep him down and thanks to proper care and treatment, Combo now has a permanent bounce in his step and as you can see in this video, he’s a friend to everyone at the shelter. Once he gets neutered, he’ll be ready to find his new forever family.
If you’re considering welcoming a pet into your life, please consider adopting a dog like Combo. Of the 70 million stray animals in the United States, only about six to eight million cats and dogs ever make it into shelters and nearly half of them are euthanized. By adopting, you help free space in the shelter for more homeless animals who are waiting to find their forever home.
