A landfill in Central Washington is under fire after tests revealed unsafe levels of toxic “forever chemicals” that could be leaking into the local water supply. As reported by Tina Deines for Yahoo News, the Rocky Top Environmental landfill near Yakima is now being monitored for contamination from PFAS—per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances—which have been linked to serious health risks.

The issue was first raised by the advocacy group Friends of Rocky Top, which had already flagged fire hazards, foul odors, and litter issues at the site. After protests, the landfill agreed to install groundwater monitoring wells. Tests showed PFAS levels at 21 nanograms per liter—well above the EPA’s safety limit of 4 nanograms per liter.

What’s even more concerning is the unknown scale of the contamination. “We have no idea where that plume has gone,” said Scott Cave, a consultant for the group. The possibility that nearby residents’ wells are affected has heightened community fears.

PFAS chemicals are found in everything from nonstick pans to waterproof jackets and have been tied to cancers, cardiovascular disease, and developmental issues. Most Americans already have trace amounts in their blood, according to health officials. While the EPA set national drinking water limits in 2024, recent federal rollbacks on environmental rules have cast doubt on long-term enforcement.

The best way to protect yourself and the planet? Opt for PFAS-free products, avoid nonstick cookware, and Support stronger regulations at all levels. We can’t undo decades of Pollution overnight, but we can demand cleaner alternatives and a healthier future for all species—human and otherwise.
