Recent research reveals that several popular condom and lubricant brands, including Trojan and K-Y Jelly, contain high levels of toxic PFAS, known as “forever chemicals.” These chemicals, commonly used for their water, stain, and heat-resistant properties, pose serious health risks as they do not naturally degrade. Studies suggest that human skin absorbs these chemicals more than previously understood, with the skin of the penis and vagina being particularly vulnerable due to its thinness and high vascularity.
PFAS have been linked to various health problems such as cancer, liver damage, thyroid issues, and reproductive health concerns, including low birth weight and infertility. In condoms, PFAS may be used to enhance latex’s moisture-repelling qualities. The recent testing by Mamavation, a consumer advocacy blog, in collaboration with an EPA-certified lab, discovered PFAS in several products, notably Trojan Ultra Thin Condoms and K-Y Jelly Classic Lubricant.
Consumer advocates are urging the industry to eliminate PFAS from these sensitive products, especially as regulatory pressure mounts at state levels despite limited federal action. Linda Birnbaum, a former EPA toxicology expert, emphasizes the need for immediate action due to the chemicals’ potential impact on the most sensitive areas of the human body.
