Kitten Food Recall Issued Over Salmonella Contamination

Blue Ridge Beef is recalling over 1,300 pounds of its Kitten Mix due to the discovery of salmonella, which has already been linked to a pet illness.

The recalled kitten food was sold in 2-pound bags and can be identified by the lot number N25-0716. Distribution of the affected product took place between July 18 and July 26, 2024, in six states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. The contamination came to light after a customer in Massachusetts reported their pet falling ill. Following this report, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources conducted tests on a sample of the food on December 12, 2024, confirming the presence of salmonella.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has urged anyone in possession of this product to dispose of it securely, ensuring that it is out of reach of pets, wildlife, and children. Alternatively, consumers can return the product to the store where it was purchased. The FDA warned, “Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.”

Pets infected by salmonella may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. Infected animals can also act as carriers, spreading the bacteria to humans and other pets.

People who handle the contaminated food or come into contact with infected pets may experience symptoms including nausea, diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and vomiting. More severe cases can lead to conditions like arthritis, muscle discomfort, urinary tract issues, and eye irritation.

Customers who have purchased the recalled product are advised to clean and disinfect any bowls, utensils, and containers that may have held the food to prevent further risk of contamination.
