Long Island Vegan Bakery Recalls Baked Goods Amid Allegations of Dunkin’ Donut Mix-Up

A recent controversy has stirred on Long Island as a local vegan bakery, The Savory Fig, voluntarily recalls some of its baked goods amidst allegations of attempting to pass off a Dunkin’ doughnut as their own creations. The saga unfolded when a suspicious-looking doughnut, resembling those from the popular fast-food chain Dunkin’, was discovered mixed with other baked goods during a delivery to a local vegan grocer. CindySnacks, a former specialty vegan grocer in Huntington, raised the alarm after finding a doughnut adorned with the telltale sprinkles typically associated with Dunkin’ Donuts in their order from The Savory Fig.

Michell Siriani, the owner of The Savory Fig, vehemently denies any wrongdoing, stating, “I would never pass off a Dunkin’ donut as either gluten-free or vegan.” Despite her protestations, concerns persisted, especially regarding potential allergens present in the doughnuts.

CindySnacks co-owner Jonathan Stengel expressed his apprehension over the doughnut’s ingredients, particularly due to severe dairy allergies among their clientele. A subsequent home-testing kit revealed a “high positive” result for gluten, further exacerbating the situation.

The allegations went viral, leading to harassment and threats against Siriani, ultimately prompting her to change her contact information and relocate. However, The Savory Fig has taken proactive steps to address the issue, collaborating with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to implement improved labeling systems and ensure product safety.

The bakery has issued a voluntary recall of various baked items, including doughnuts, frosted rolls, matcha cinnamon rolls, maple pecan oat scones, and blackberry crumb muffins, due to the potential presence of undeclared wheat gluten, soy, and/or milk allergens. While no illnesses or injuries have been reported thus far, the recall underscores the importance of transparency and vigilance in food production, particularly concerning allergen management.
