As Thanksgiving approached, a food recall raised concerns among consumers. Over 72,000 pounds of ready-to-eat poultry and meat products were recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can lead to severe illness or even death. Tragically, the outbreak has already been linked to one fatality.
Listeria monocytogenes poses a particularly high risk to seniors, pregnant individuals, newborns, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can range from vomiting and diarrhea to more severe conditions such as confusion, seizures, and fever. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 11 cases of infection have been linked to this outbreak so far, resulting in nine hospitalizations and one death.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) initially flagged the issue on November 9, identifying 4,589 pounds of products from Yu Shang Food, Inc., a South Carolina-based processor. However, by November 21, the recall expanded to include an additional 67,651 pounds, totaling 23 different products. These include various pork, chicken, duck, and lamb items, such as Braised Pork Belly, Spicy Duck Tongues, and Lambs Head Soup. A complete list is available on the USDA’s website, with packaging marked by establishment numbers “P-46684” or “EST. M46684.”
The products were distributed nationwide and sold both in stores and online, with all affected items produced before October 28, 2024. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for these items and dispose of or return them if found. Any surfaces they contacted should also be thoroughly cleaned.
While cases have been reported in California, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York, the nationwide distribution of the recalled products means infections could emerge in other states.
