Plastic Pollution isn’t just about oceans or overflowing landfills anymore—it’s personal. Microplastics are now showing up in our blood, lungs, brain tissue, and even the placentas of unborn babies. According to SFGate’s Meg Carney, we’re being exposed to tiny plastic fragments through the air we breathe, the water we drink, and even the food we eat.

Each year, over 400 million tons of plastic are produced globally—nearly half of it for single use. As this plastic degrades, it breaks down into microplastics that pollute soil, water, and air. One California lawmaker is pushing back: Assemblymember Tasha Boerner’s AB 823 proposes a ban on plastic microbeads in leave-on products to curb the hidden dangers in our homes.

Microplastics aren’t just a health issue—they’re an environmental crisis. Wildlife often mistake plastic for food, leading to injury and death, while plastic Pollution disrupts entire ecosystems.

The good news? Simple, low-cost swaps can make a real difference. At home, ditch plastic containers and nonstick pans for glass and stainless steel. Replace synthetic sponges with natural ones. Opt for solid shampoo bars, bamboo toothbrushes, and refillable cleaning solutions. On the go, bring a reusable water bottle with a microplastic filter like the LifeStraw Sip and avoid bottled drinks, which can contain up to 280,000 microplastics per liter.

Even our diets matter—ultra-processed meats and seafood rank among the highest sources of ingested microplastics. Choosing fresh, whole, plant-based foods is not just healthier—it’s smarter for the planet.

Every reusable product you choose and every bit of packaging you skip sends a message. A plastic-free future starts with mindful choices. Choose fewer plastics, eat more plant-based, and protect the world inside and around you.
