In Gaza, where war and widespread hunger have displaced many, a group of resilient youth is finding innovative ways to make a living. With limited access to commercial fuel, they are turning plastic waste into crude fuel, an essential resource for the local community. Along the Sea Road, south of Gaza City, these young Palestinians use makeshift burners to melt plastic waste in metal drums, extracting fuel that is then bottled and sold at a lower price to passers-by.

The process is not without its risks. Long hours spent exposed to smoke, fumes, and open flames are common, but for many of these displaced individuals, this is the only way to earn money and Support their families. Despite the health hazards, it is a vital survival tactic in an unstable environment where food insecurity and the ongoing conflict have left half a million people in the Gaza Strip facing starvation.

This grassroots fuel production has become a crucial lifeline for local residents, often used to power generators and transport. The makeshift burners are an effective, albeit basic, solution to a dire problem, helping to alleviate the scarcity of fuel that has intensified with the war. The fuel is sold to individuals traveling between northern and southern Gaza, offering them a more affordable option than commercial fuel alternatives.

The work is challenging, and the youth involved do so with little more than the hope of earning enough to get by in these incredibly difficult circumstances. The situation in Gaza remains dire, but the resilience of these young Palestinians in transforming plastic waste into fuel offers a rare glimpse of resourcefulness in the face of adversity.
