The Environmental Crisis in Northern Gaza is a Dire Threat to Displaced Palestinians

bomb blast in palestine

The ongoing conflict in northern Gaza, under relentless Israeli attacks, has led to severe environmental pollution that endangers the lives of displaced Palestinians, including tens of thousands of children already grappling with hunger. The health crisis is escalating, exacerbated by food shortages and Israeli restrictions on aid, further deteriorating the well-being of the local population.

The Palestinian population is suffering from a lack of adequate nutrition, which is compounded by diseases spread by environmental Pollution. Israeli military actions have directly targeted municipal workers across Gaza, severely disrupting essential cleaning services. This disruption has led to the accumulation of over 100,000 tons of solid waste in Gaza City alone, posing significant health risks, especially to those in overcrowded shelter centers.

Local and international health organizations have repeatedly issued warnings about the spread of diseases and epidemics among the displaced due to overcrowding, lack of personal hygiene, and insufficient medical treatments. Data from the Gaza Strip’s government media office reveals that since the onset of Israeli attacks on October 7, 2023, nearly 71,338 cases of viral hepatitis infections have been recorded among the displaced population.

Husni Muhenna, a spokesperson for Gaza Municipality, highlighted the grave dangers posed by the buildup of solid waste, which contributes to the breeding of insects and rodents, further accelerating the spread of infectious diseases. The situation is dire in shelter centers, where overcrowding, shared bathrooms, and a lack of cleaning supplies and water create a breeding ground for epidemics.

Elderly Palestinian Ragde Hasaneyn voiced his fears about the unsanitary conditions. He said, “Even if we survive Israel’s bombings and attacks, we cannot escape the epidemics spreading in the shelter centers due to overcrowding, having to share the same bathrooms, and the lack of cleaning supplies and water.” The humanitarian crisis is compounded by Israel’s disregard for a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire, resulting in widespread international condemnation.

Since the conflict began, over 38,300 Palestinians have been killed, predominantly women and children, with nearly 88,300 others injured. Nine months into the Israeli offensive, vast areas of Gaza remain in ruins under a crippling blockade that restricts access to food, clean water, and medicine. The International Court of Justice has accused Israel of genocide and ordered an immediate halt to its military operations in Rafah, where over a million Palestinians sought refuge before it was invaded on May 6.
