A massive and alarming event has been uncovered beneath Greenland’s ice sheet. According to ScienceAlert’s Michelle Starr, scientists discovered that in 2014, around 90 billion liters of meltwater suddenly burst upward through tens of meters of ice, fracturing the surface and flooding out into the open.

This is the first time researchers have documented such an explosive event in Greenland. The discovery was made by glaciologists from Lancaster University, who used satellite data to track dramatic changes in the ice sheet. In just 10 days, an area covering two square kilometers dropped by 85 meters—roughly the height of a skyscraper—after a huge underground lake drained. The force was so intense that it left behind fractured ice, massive ice boulders, and a six-square-kilometer patch of scoured surface.

Subglacial lakes under Greenland are still a relatively new scientific discovery, and their behavior remains poorly understood. Glaciologist Jade Bowling explained that these hidden lakes may drain unpredictably, reshaping the ice sheet in ways that could accelerate melting. If the Greenland ice sheet were to melt completely, global sea levels would rise by around 24 feet—a catastrophic scenario for coastal cities and wildlife habitats worldwide.

Scientists warn that as global temperatures climb, meltwater events like this could become more frequent, adding yet another layer of urgency to climate action. As glaciologist Amber Leeson emphasized, understanding Greenland’s “hidden hydrology” is crucial for predicting future sea level rise.

The planet is sending warning after warning, and it’s up to us to listen. Choosing plant-based diets, cutting down on fossil fuels, and demanding real climate policies are everyday actions that add up. Greenland’s cracking ice is not just a distant event—it’s a direct reminder of the fragile balance we’re disrupting.
